Friendship Day

Friendship day is a day set aside to celebrate friendship love. The celebrations are held during the first Sunday of the month of August. This year, it was celebrated on the 3rd of August, 2008. The idea of setting aside a friendship day in the year to honor friends was approved by the United States Congress in the year 1935. Slowly, the celebrations have gained popularity in the U.S. and throughout the world and today, friendship day is a festival that is celebrated in many countries worldwide including India on the same day. On this day, people express love for their friends by spending time with them, sending them flowers, friendship day gifts, wrist bands and cards. Parties, programs and get-togethers are held to tighten friendship. Old friends are also remembered on this day and gifts, poems and flowers are exchanged.

Some associations or groups of people celebrate friendship day during a different day and in a completely different form.

 

For example some celebrate a National Friendship Day on the 1st Sunday of August, Women’s Friendship Day on the 3rd Sunday of August, International Friendship Month celebrated in February and Old Friends, New Friends Week on the 3rd week of the month of May every year. However, the underlying idea in all these different days of celebrations is the recognition of friendships and their importance in our lives. People show their love for friends and they treasure the presence of friends in their lives.

The true worth and essence of friendship can be expressed by friendship quotes. These are popular sayings that sail from the hearts of well-known and celebrated writers, loyal friends and personalities


They are sentimental and soft lines regarding friendship and friends.  Sending them on friendship day, will make that friend think more lovingly and fondly about the sender. It also makes the recipient know that their friendship is valued and not taken for granted.  Hand in hand with quotes are friendship poems. Another popular way to express friendship love during friendship day is by the use of friendship cards. These can be either physical or e-cards. They are very popular as they can be customized to suite a particular relationship. Cards come in handy to express deep feelings of friendship. Many friendship card manufacturers carry a wide variety to cater to every need.  Additionally they with the advent of online greeting cards, sending friendship cards has become much easier and faster. As friendship day is a happy occasion, the friendship cards incorporate a component of humor and fun in them.

Many look upon friendship as the ultimate bond that creates the foundation of human trust, faith and companionship. In many holy books, friendship is frequently mentioned in relation to the human spirit, heart, and the heart’s involvement with forgiveness, positive love and peace. Friendship day is therefore an excellent day to show love and appreciation for the people in one’s life.
