Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday also referred to as the ‘Festival of Lights’ or ‘Feast of Dedication’. The commemoration of this Jewish Hanukkah lastsfor eight days. Chanukah is the Hebrew name for this celebrationCharacterizing the festival is a kindling of lights. A menorah or hanukiah is the special candle lit for each night of the celebration. Shamash is an extra light lit each of the 8 nights but located at a distinct position usually lower or higher than the other lights. The main use of the Chanukkah candles is for pleasure only and not for any other productive purpose.

Commemorated on eight successive days starting on the 25th day of Kislev, Hanukkah is an annual celebration. Kislev is the third month on the Jewish calendar but corresponds to December in the Gregorian calendar. Celebrated in remembrance of the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem, the Jews have commemorated Hanukkah for many years.

Being the commonly celebrated American Jewish holiday, Hanukkah is a favorite holiday for many. It is a fun and child-centered occasion marked with delicious food recipes and exchange of Hanukkah gifts. Something not to overlook is the lighting of the striking menorah during the celebrations because the menorah marks the day. Bright candles of different types and scents present the best menorah for the occasion. Unlike other holidays celebrated by the Jews, Hanukkah is a festival that is easy to celebrate because no spiritual reflections or intense preparation is required.

.The Hannukah festival also reaffirms the enduring struggle by the Jews to live a Jewish lifestyle and abide to God’s Commandments. The very important message that everyone has to get lies in the holiday’s name: ‘Dedication’.

After dedicating themselves through action and faith, the Jews believe that their Judaism becomes strong. Strengthening the people and the religion remains an important aspect when observing this festival

A happy Hanukkah is marked with Hanukkah decorations and various traditional hannukah recipes. Oil is used to prepare the foods, in commemoration of the oil, which burned out in the temple. The most common food in the United States for hannukah celebrations is sufganiya. This is a jelly-like donut cooked in oil.  The Israelites eat sufganiyot for over a month beforethe launch of Hanukkah celebrations. Another Hanukkah tradition is eating of dairy products like cheese. Judith the Jewish heroine is remembered when taking the cheese. According to the legend, she saved her village from Syrian attackers. She fed cheese and wine to the Syrians until they became drunk and then conquered them.

Chanukkah is among the best renowned Jewish Holidays and occurs around the same time as Christmas and Kwanzaa. Most non-Jews and assimilated Jews think of the Hanukkah holiday as the Christmas day for the Jews. Due to this, many of the Christmas customs have been adapted, for instance, giving of judaica gifts and putting up Hanukkah decorations. The Hanukkah holiday celebration is rooted in a revolution that is against suppression and assimilation of the Jewish religion. However, the holiday has ironically become one of the most secular and assimilated holidays.

Hanukkah is a very cheerful time in Israel. Schools go on holiday for a week and there is plenty of partying all around the country. Hannukah songs are sung and there are various types of Hanukkah recipes served to everyone together with lots of calorific foods. Generally, there is plenty of fun during the Chanukah celebrations.
