Labor Day

Labor Day is a holiday observed the world over. In the United States, this day falls on every first Monday of September each year. All the fifty states in America have made it a state holiday. The history of Labor Day dates back to 1882. On this day, the Central Labor union, in New York, wanted to create a day in which the working citizen would not have to go to work. They called it “a day off for the working man. “Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894. Americans dedicate this holiday to the achievements Americans have made socially and economically. The founder of Labor Day is not famous. However, Peter McGuire the secretary of Brotherhood of carpenters and joiners was one of the people who history credits with founding Labor Day. Others are Mathew Maguire a machinist and Paterson NJ, secretary of Local 344 of the international Association of Machinist. These two proposed the holiday in 1882. Americans celebrated the first Labor Day on Tuesday 5 September 1882. The Central Labor Union celebrated the second Labor Day holiday in 1883

 

Labor Day celebrations go hand in hand with Labor Day weekend celebrations. Since 1966, Americans hold the annual telethon of the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Labor Day weekend. Jerry Lewis usually hosts this telethon. The telethon raises millions of dollars that is channeled towards research and support programs for patients who suffer from various diseases. The Bumbershoot happens on Labor Day weekend. This is a three-day arts and music labor Day festival held in Seattle. The bumbershoot, which means umbrella in slang, includes Labor Day events such as concerts at the memorial stadium, film screenings, live theaters and live comedy. The Labor Day’s Bumbershoot event started in 1971.

 


Chicago residents too hold large Polish themed Labor Day festival celebrations on Labor Day weekend. These celebrations feature Polish traditions and customs.  This Labor Day event is held in Copernicus foundation in Jefferson Park and usually attracts high profile guests and over 30000 people every year. Another labor day event that Americans hold on Labor Day is Booms day.  This is a fire works display in the southern states. The people have held it since 1986 in native Knoxville, Tennessee.  Every year over 350,000, people attend the Labor Day festival

Another Labor Day festival is the Mackinac Bridge Walk.  The Americans living in Michigan have been holding this event since the Labor Day of 1958. In this Labor day event, people walk across the length of the bridge. According to fashion etiquette, one should not wear white on Labor Day holiday. However, people are doing away with this custom. This is because magazines hail people who wear white on this weekend day. Another Labor Day event is Mustaches on the river. Californians grow mustaches that can float in the Russian river. There are judges who judge the mustaches when the events end. All benefits go to charity. One can participate in many Labor Day events on Labor Day making it a worthwhile celebration.
